Yerba mansa is a wildflower which grows in riparian zones and which is
native to southwestern North America. It grows at elevations up to about
6500 feet. The specimens featured in this video were found at the following places:
Jordan Hot Springs, Sierra Nevada, Tulare County
Cottonwood Canyon, Death Valley National Park, Inyo County
Scodie Meadow, Sacatar Trail Wilderness, Tulare County
This perennial stands between six and twenty inches in height. It spreads by
creeping rhizomes and forms clumps around water sources. The leaves are oblong
and form on long stalks. The tiny flowers form in a cluster that appears to be
a single large flower. The roots are said to be peppery in taste and the entire
plant is said to have been used for its medicinal qualities by Native Americans.
Said to have medicinal properties, but there is little evidence to support
claims. However, it might slow the growth of certain types of cancer, but
it's not clear how this works.
Several uses listed including using the powder made from the dried root to
treat athlete's foot or diaper rash. Said to have antimicrobial and
antibacterial properties.
