PLANT TYPE: Perennial.


Yerba mansa is a wildflower which grows in riparian zones and which is native to southwestern North America. It grows at elevations up to about 6500 feet. The specimens featured in this video were found at the following places:
  • Jordan Hot Springs, Sierra Nevada, Tulare County
  • Cottonwood Canyon, Death Valley National Park, Inyo County
  • Scodie Meadow, Sacatar Trail Wilderness, Tulare County
  • Millers Spring, Darwin Plateau, Inyo County

This perennial stands between six and twenty inches in height. It spreads by creeping rhizomes and forms clumps around water sources. The leaves are oblong and form on long stalks. The tiny flowers form in a cluster that appears to be a single large flower. The roots are said to be peppery in taste and the entire plant is said to have been used for its medicinal qualities by Native Americans.
